Diamondbacks Shoot Down Cardinals With Long Ball Barage, 7-2

Great game from the D-backs offense to give Dan Haren plenty of support. More than he needed, in fact, but then again, with the way the bullpen has been pitching, no lead is too big.

Haren Deals, Reynolds Rakes As D-backs Down Cardinals, 7-2

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Mark Reynolds finished a triple shy of the cycle and Dan Haren tossed eight solid innings, as the Arizona Diamondbacks handled the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-2, in the second test of a three-game series at Chase Field.

Reynolds went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two RBI for the Diamondbacks, who bounced back from a 5-2 defeat in the series opener on Friday. Adam LaRoche hit a pair of solo homers for Arizona, which also got a solo shot from Chris Snyder.

Haren (7-4), who played for St. Louis from 2003-04, gave up two runs on six hits to win his second consecutive start. He also fanned nine batters and walked zero.

"I felt real good, had a good bullpen, the team gave me an early lead so I was really able to attack guys," Haren said. "I got in big trouble that one inning, bases loaded, one out. I was able to get out of that and pretty much cruised, threw a lot of strikes."

Colby Rasmus hit a solo homer for the Cardinals, who have dropped five of six. Ryan Ludwick drove in the other run in defeat.

Adam Ottavino (0-2), making his third major league start, allowed six runs on nine hits over just 3 2/3 innings to take the loss.

"I just left pitches up and they whacked them, its pretty simple," Ottavino said. "It felt like even when I got ahead of the hitters, I couldn't put them away. They got themselves back to good counts, and bad things were happening."

The D'Backs got on the board in the first. Stephen Drew worked a two-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, and crossed the plate on Reynolds' double.

Back-to-back solo homers by Reynolds and LaRoche made it a 3-0 game in the third.

Arizona put a three-spot on the board in the fourth to make it a six-run contest. Snyder hit a one-out, solo homer to left. Haren followed with a double and scored on Kelly Johnson's two-bagger. Two batters later, Drew hit a double of his own to plate Johnson.

Haren, who was perfect through four frames, gave up a run in the top of the fifth. Matt Holliday led off with a double down the left-field line and came around to score on Ludwick's base hit. The Cardinals stranded the bases loaded later in the inning.

The Diamondbacks got the run back in the home half on LaRoche's second solo blast of the game.

Rasmus' homer in the sixth proved to be the final run of the tilt.

St. Louis took two of three from the D'Backs earlier in the year after winning the series 4-2 a year ago...The Diamondbacks reinstated catcher Miguel Montero from the 15-day disabled list. To make room for Montero's return, the team optioned catcher John Hester to Triple-A Reno...Johnson extended his hitting streak to nine games...The D'Backs have allowed 33 homers since May 20.

Diamondbacks Seek Win, Haren Faces Rookie, 5:10 p.m. AZT

(Sports Network) - Recent first-round draft pick Adam Ottavino takes a third crack at a first big-league win tonight when the St. Louis Cardinals head to Chase Field for the second test of a three-game National League series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Cardinals won Friday's opener, 5-2, and now trail Cincinnati by a half- game in the NL Central.

Brendan Ryan clubbed a three-run home run in the win, while Skip Schumaker went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Yadier Molina was also 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Cardinals, who snapped a four-game skid.

Jaime Garcia (6-2) threw five innings and was charged with just one run on four hits with five walks and four strikeouts.

Adam LaRoche drove in both runs for the Diamondbacks, who have dropped four of their last six. Rodrigo Lopez (2-5) dropped his third straight decision as he was banged up for five runs on six hits with four strikeouts over seven innings.

Ottavino, the 30th overall selection in 2006 out of Northeastern University, made his debut in the majors on May 29 as a replacement for teammate Kyle Lohse after he went on the disabled list with forearm issues.

The New York native was touched for five hits and four runs in 5 2/3 innings of a 5-0 loss against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

He returned for start No. 2 on June 5 against Milwaukee and got a no-decision after surrendering five hits and a pair of runs in five innings.

St. Louis won the game, 5-4.

For Arizona, ex-Cardinals right-hander Dan Haren starts for the second time this season and fourth time in his career against St. Louis.

The 29-year-old Californian was touched for nine hits and seven runs in six innings on April 20 against St. Louis before escaping with a 9-7 triumph. The win was his third in as many lifetime starts against the Cardinals, who drafted him in 2001. He debuted with six wins in 28 games - 19 starts - for St. Louis in 2003-04 before heading to Oakland in 2005.

Haren won 14, 14 and 15 games with the Athletics in three seasons and won 16 and 14 in his initial two years with the Diamondbacks.

He was a 7-4 winner over Atlanta on June 7, scattering nine hits and three runs in 5 2/3 innings.

St. Louis took two of three from the D-Backs earlier in the year after winning the series 4-2 a year ago.
