College Football Rankings, Week 9: Arizona Wildcats Fighting BCS Gravity

The Arizona Wildcats (6-1, 3-1 Pac-10) sit comfortably in the BCS rankings, ranked 15th overall. With a road matchup against the underwhelming UCLA Bruins (3-4, 1-3 Pac-10) on the schedule for this weekend, chances are strong that they will improve to 7-1.

Can this team move up in the rankings? Lets take a look at the competition that is localized to the teens of the BCS rankings and see might take a loss this weekend.

14th ranked Nebraska has a very tough test on Saturday afternoon, taking on 6th-ranked Missouri at home in a Big XII showdown. This is not an envious situation to be in, and I fully anticipate Missouri to continue their dream season and beat the Cornhuskers.

Stanford (6-1, 3-1 Pac-10), ranked 13th in the BCS, has a road game against Washington (3-4, 2-2 Pac-10). The Huskies are like Jekyll and Hyde, beating topnotch teams and also somehow losing to moribund ASU. The Cardinal should have no problem, but anything can happen on the gridiron.

As Arizona continues to mind its own business and win the games on the schedule, they will slowly move up the BCS rankings. Whether or not they can stay there with road games against Stanford and Oregon still to come remains to be seen, but that's why you take it one game at a time.

College Football Rankings, Week 9: Auburn Jumps Oregon For Top BCS Spot

There was a big shakeup in the college football rankings this week after Oklahoma was upset by Missouri in Columbia. Oregon, top-ranked in both the USA Today and AP poll this week, was leapfrogged by Auburn in the BCS rankings.

The Auburn Tigers were handsomely rewarded for their victory over LSU on Saturday. Tiger quarterback Cameron Newton looks unstoppable, a true dual-threat player in the vein of Tim Tebow. Newton has already amassed over 1,000 yards on the ground, while throwing for 1,364 yards through eight games.

Auburn's OOC schedule is soft, with games against Arkansas State, Louisiana-Monroe and Chattanooga. The computers highly value the SEC conference, allowing the Tigers to move up sharply in this week's BCS rankings.

After handily beating Washington in Tucson, Arizona moved up to 16th in the USA Today poll, while staying stagnant at 15th overall in the AP poll. As for their BCS ranking, Arizona is now 15th overall.

The Wildcats have a tough road ahead of them if they wish to break into a BCS bowl: road games against UCLA, Stanford, and Oregon are mixed between tough home match-ups against USC and Arizona State. Should Arizona win out, they would have a strong case for inclusion in the BCS Championship game.

Michigan State moves up to 5th, and Missouri is now 6th in the BCS rankings.

Full standings are as follows:

  1. Auburn
  2. Oregon
  3. Boise State
  4. TCU
  5. Michigan State
  6. Missouri
  7. Alabama

College Football Rankings, Week 8: An Arizona Homecoming Against Washington

Since the BCS rankings are what truly matter from here on out, we will use those rankings when writing up these weekly updates.

The Arizona Wildcats (5-1, 2-1 Pac-10) are ranked 18 in the BCS poll, but they are bound to move up after this week if they are able to beat the Washington Huskies (3-3, 2-1 Pac-10). Beating Washington will be no small feat, as the Huskies have already knocked off two ranked foes this season ( at then-18 USC and in Seattle against then-24 Oregon State).

Wisconsin and Iowa, ranked 13th and 15th respectively, will clash on Saturday and #14 Nebraska plays #16 Oklahoma State in Stillwater.

The losers of both of those games will drop below the Wildcats, and with #17 Florida State taking the week off, the Wildcats might be able to rise 3 spots based on gravity alone.

It goes without saying that Arizona needs to take care of what is in its control - the game on its schedule. The Wildcats will go to a BCS bowl if they can win out, and that should be their only focus.

BCS Standings: Arizona Getting About Same Love As Other College Football Polls

The BCS rankings were released yesterday in grand fanfair on ESPN. It was an hour-long show befitting the network that brought you LeBron James’ “Decision.”

With all the hoopla focused on number 1 Oklahoma, further down the ranking is Arizona at 18 which is right where the AP Poll (15) and the USA Today Poll (18) have the Wildcats.

College Football Rankings: Arizona Wildcats Hang Around 15 With Win Over Washington State

The Arizona Wildcats lost starting quarterback Nick Foles for the next two or three weeks with a knee injury which will make it hard to remain in the top 25 in the college football rankings, but for now they are still there.

Today's college football polls didn't exactly give Arizona a lot of love for beating a lowly Washington State team but at least it didn't move backwards.

Today's AP Poll has the Wildcats at 15 while the USA Today Coaches Poll puts Arizona at 18.

Next up for Arizona are the Washington Huskies followed by the UCLA Bruins and after that comes the 14th ranked Stanford Cardinal. Arizona doesn't face the nation's number 1 team, the Oregon Ducks, until Nov. 26.

College Football Rankings, Week 7: Arizona Looks To Move Up Again

Arizona is now ranked 17 in the AP Top 25 after losing to the Oregon State Beavers in Tucson last Saturday. Fortunately for the Wildcats, they have their annual matchup against Washington State to look forward to this weekend.

With a reasonable amount of effort and a focus on righting the ship, UA should be able to blow out the Cougars in Pullman. Will they be able to move up in the rankings? Lets take a look at the competition.

#16 Florida State is taking on a sub-.500 Boston College squad at home. This is a game the Seminoles should win handily.

#15 Iowa (I know, ridiculous, right?) is traveling to Ann Arbor to take on the 5-1 Michigan Wolverines. Going into the Big House is never an easy task, and the Hawkeyes could leave with their second loss of the season.

Other games of note:

#12 Arkansas and #7 Auburn meet in a battle of quality SEC teams. If Arkansas loses, they will drop below the Wildcats.

Realistically, Arizona can only hope to break the top 15, and that's only if the cards fall the right way. The Wildcats have a tough path ahead of them after being dropped quite far down the rankings. It's almost unfair. Almost.
